Things are looking up. Today I turned in one paper, and made HUGE progress towards finishing the other big doozy of a paper. That means all I have left this semester is 6 exams, a webpage to finish, and actually writing the doozy of a paper. No problem. Seeing as how I turned a paper in today, I figured that meant I deserved a little relaxation time. Right? For once, the ladybugs left me alone. I was laying the in hammock with Darryl, and we noticed these two squirrels in our really big maple tree. They were really cute. They were playing. They were wiggling their tails at each other. Yoder barked at them, but they didn't care. It's spring, after all. Suddenly, the squirrels noticed us. Maybe they recognized us from when we cut down two of their favorite trees earlier this month. Maybe they were irritated that I stopped giving them the ends of the loaves of wheat bread. Squirrels are hard to read, but they didn't look quite as friendly as they had before. They ran waaaay out on the tiniest little branches above the hammock. (Can you feel the anticipation building?) They were right above us, looking down, chattering. I suggested that we go inside. Darryl was firm about not letting the squirrels think it's their yard or something. Whatever, I was seriously having visions of rabies right about then. The chattering got louder. Four squirrel eyes focused down on us. Darryl said the squirrels were more afraid of us than we were of them. I knew he was wrong in my case. I suggested that maybe they have babies, and feel threatened, in which case, we *should* be more frightened, as at least one of them might not mind dying in defense of their nest. Suddenly, the squirrels leaped. Right over our heads. Onto the TINIEST branches of the pine tree the hammock is attached to. But they held on to the new branches with these horrible vicious squirrel claws. The next thing I know, I hear scritchy-scratchy feet running down the tree at HIGH SPEED. I'm not ashamed to say that I about lost my mind right then. Apparently, the squirrels then jumped to the next maple tree down the line, and took off. All those threats were for nothing. Most luckily of all, in my terrified attempt to outrun the squirrels (HA!! Those suckers are FAST.) I did not flip Darryl out of the hammock. Now that I think about it, maybe they were just trying to tell me I'd better start writing that paper. Who am I to defy a squirrel? Have a great weekend, everyone!! Enjoy the spring weather!!
