I'm sure some of you have already heard...

...the news that Darryl and I bought another house. All week, I've been meaning to post the before pictures, but by the time I get home, I'm just too darn tired. We're renovating the first floor apartment, and want to try to get it done by May 1. That's a pretty tight schedule, considering all that has to be done. Say, if anyone has some free time and wants to help out, stop by. :) I'll pay you in... uh... lunches? And invaluable experience? I can... show you how to renovate a dilapidated neglected century home and turn it into a place someone might want to live in in a very short time frame and on a seriously restrictive budget? What's that? You're busy? Yeah, I understand. To save those of you uninterested, I made a flicker set that you can check out, or not.

New "house"
Comments:
I'm obviously out of the loop. Congrats! Are you going to flip the house? Is it close to where you live now?

Century old homes go for big bucks down here ... renovated or not. Sounds like a really good investment. Post lots of pics!
Is this next door to your current house? Are you going to be featured in an upcoming episode of "Flip that House" or "Property Ladder"?

I'm assuming those are plaster walls. How do you get acrylic paint off plaster? You can certainly lightly sand sheetrock, but wouldn't that be disasterous with plaster?

I'm very jealous of your handy husband. If we lived up there, I would be sending Scott over every possible moment so Daryl could tutor him. I actually agree that the experience IS invaluable.
We're just going to see how it goes. Ideally, we'd like to rent it for a while, and get even more out of it. We'll see how much work renting ends up being. :)

Luckily for us, the house is right next door. So, we can keep an eye on it, walk home when we're tired of working, use our own bathroom, and cook our own lunches and dinners. It's pretty good!

The acrylic paint is a NIGHTMARE. Some, we sanded off. Some, we scraped off with a razor. In some places, we had to tear out the plaster. It's gross. Mostly, it hasn't been as terrible as it might have been because there are so many coats of paint on the walls that the paint chips are actually over 1/8" thick. Scary.

I love that "Flip This House" show, though. Maybe we'll have to re-think renting. ;)
I know how you feel. Did I mention we're keeping the house we're in now? We're going to rent it, as well. We're staying in the same neighborhood (I think our new house may be 1/2 mile away), so we'll be driving by our old house whenever we go home.

But I agree. Two mortgages is scary. Just pray for good renters.
That's so great that you're renting, too. I think that's the best possible renting situation; you know everything about the house, AND it's right around the corner where you can keep an eye on things. Plus, if something breaks, you don't have to go on a long drive to take care of it. That's awesome.

I am definitely praying for good renters - for you now, too!
