Friday, May 26, 2006Plumbers, Part Deux
The plumber arrived at about 9:00. By that time, I had been searching madly for the key to the rental house for 30 minutes. I kept calling Darryl, but he got a new phone, and apparently was not hearing the ringer.
I told the plumber we were locked out. No problem, says he. He starts looking for an open window. Turns out, we left a window unlocked in the living room. So he pushes it open, stands on a lawn chair, and breaks in. Did I mention this man is like 80?
After he gets in, Darryl calls back and says that he indeed has the key; but there is a spare key in a box in the kitchen (!) and that I could have used the keys to the upstairs apartment to get into the basement and walked up into the first floor, too. Stupid. I do not mention this to the plumber.
The day proceeds much like the last one, except I try to spend most of my time in my living room reading instead of listening to stories. I only have moderate success, though, because he keeps needing someone to turn on water, or to look for a leak, etc.
Around noon, he is ready to put in the plumbing for the shower/tub. He asks a lot of questions about the fixtures we're buying, but I don't know the answers. It seems like we're going to need to obtain the tub. Why didn't we know this yesterday? I don't know. I call Darryl and tell him it looks like he'll be tub shopping for lunch. He's already having a crazy day - you know the kind of day that happens when you come back from vacation and have a week's worth of work just waiting for you?
Darryl is right around the corner from Lowe's, though, where we picked out the tub. Only, they don't have something in stock, and if we spent only $100 more then we could get a much better unit, they say. Also, they cannot confirm or deny that the tub is fiberglass, not acrylic. Unsatisfied, Darryl puts in a quick call to a contractor he knows, who sends Darryl to Independence to look at a contractor showroom there. Darryl goes, finds a much better unit for $50 less, puts it on the contractor's charge, loads it in the truck, and heads to the house.
He arrives at 2:00 - when he is supposed to be meeting someone in Mayfield Heights, a 25 minute drive away. Anyway, the plumber is pissing me off; he is so sure Darryl got the wrong things. Turn out, Darryl got all the right things, except for the tub. We needed a left hand tub. He told the warehouse left hand. They loaded a box in the truck marked left hand. Inside the box was a right-handed tub.
At least the plumber has measurements. He does most of the rest of the plumbing, and everything turns out ok. But he's taking longer than his company expected, so he has to go to another job Friday. He'll be back Monday or Tuesday. And hopefully, he'll finish.
I'm telling you, I couldn't make up stories this crazy.
Comments:
Hahaha it's true! Normally the windows are always locked, but we haven't been to worried because there's nothing in that house to steal anyway.
It definitely illustrated to me just how easy it would be to break in, though!!
You have to post more pictures of the progress on the house. What a nightmare! I really do feel your pain. I never knew building could be such a nightmare, and we're not even doing the work ourselves.
We have, however, been fixing our current house up for rent. But it is NOTHING like the project on your hands. You wanted a fiberglass tub specifically? Why is that? I ended up upgrading in the new house to a porceline tub in the guest bath. I wanted to avoid fiberglass all together. Maybe I was misguided.
One more thing...
In my experience, anyone "handy" can easily break into a house. They get locked out all the time, and know just how to do it. If you're really paranoid you could get a security system, but most of these guys know how to go around those as well. I wouldn't worry about the 80-year-old plumber. ;-)
Yeah, I'm not TOO concerned. He's a nice guy, and the police patrol so much here, I think a break-in is really unlikely. Our neighborhood is SO safe.

Anyway, we have a cast iron porcelain tub in OUR house. But for a rental, it was cheap cheap cheap. So the choices are fiberglass or acrylic. And over time, acrylic gets brittle and will crack and leak, while fiberglass will last a bit longer. I think you definitely made the right choice of tubs - I would not have that fiberglass crap in a house I lived in!!! I have to go over and take pictures soon - Darryl's been on my case about it. And since we GOT A TENANT YESTERDAY (!) I need to get it in gear. |
